Help me settle an argument. My friend Ralphio says that a car engine gets hot enough to fry an egg. I say if the engine were that hot, it would melt all the plastic under the hood. How hot does a car engine get?

Well, it looks like you owe Ralphio breakfast! The average temperature for an engine is between 195-220 degrees Fahrenheit. The perfect temperature to fry an egg is around 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
You are correct in a way, as well. The engine’s temperature does exceed the melting point of several materials under the hood, like aluminum. However, due to the magic of engineering, very rarely does the engine melt anything.
Actually, this is also why regular
car maintenance
is so important. The coolant in your car’s radiator is responsible for dissipating the heat from the engine. If the radiator isn’t cared for, the car will overheat.
